The Intimacy Instinct in the Enneagram

The Intimacy instinct is concerned with attraction, chemistry, and the people or experiences that make us feel especially alive. It’s often called the Sexual or One-to-One instinct, but I prefer Intimacy because it leaves room for all the ways this intensity can appear beyond sex or romance.

It can show up through a longing for an extraordinary relationship, a desire to captivate someone, a fascination with a particular person or idea, or the need for life to feel vivid and emotionally charged. And just as with the other instincts, it looks very different depending on the Enneagram type.

What the Intimacy Instinct Is Really About

This instinct is often described in terms of closeness, but ordinary intimacy doesn’t fully capture it. There’s an element of attraction and intensity, of being drawn toward something that feels compelling and wanting an experience that goes beyond the everyday.

That doesn’t mean every Intimacy subtype is openly seductive, romantic, or dramatic. An Intimacy Five may guard their private world fiercely while dreaming of a relationship in which they can finally trust someone completely. An Intimacy Three may become the appealing person someone else wants without recognizing how much of themselves they’ve adapted. An Intimacy Six might deal with attraction and fear by trying to appear strong enough that nobody can hurt them.

What these people share isn’t a single relationship style. It’s the tendency for their deepest personality concerns to become particularly charged around attraction, desire, emotional intensity, and the possibility of an extraordinary connection.

How to Recognize This Instinct

An Intimacy Four and Intimacy Three might both make themselves especially appealing to a person they desire, yet the Four may privately feel that the persona hides a flawed but deeply felt self, while the Three may identify so completely with the desirable image that the separation is harder to recognize. That’s why the subtype is more than a relationship label.

If you recognize the Intimacy instinct in yourself, it can be useful to ask what draws you in so powerfully, what kind of connection you imagine will finally satisfy you, and which parts of yourself become exaggerated or hidden when you want to be chosen.
